Index of References to John F. Kerry in FBI Documents on the VVAW
Compiled by Andrew W. Pollock III
Introduction:
Below is an index of references to recent presidential candidate John
F. Kerry in papers that were compiled by the FBI in connection with
their investigation of the Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW).
John Kerry's affiliation with the group appears to have commenced in
1970, and to have ended in November or December 1971. Altogether,
dozens of references to Kerry have been found in documents included in
this collection of papers dating 1970 through 1972. It is likely that
several additional references to Kerry also exist in documents dating
1973 and later, but these later references appear to be mostly
retrospective, referring to events that are detailed in documents
produced in the 1970-1972 period, and accordingly, are not included
here.
Format:
The FBI papers on the VVAW are available for $45.00 in CD-ROM format
from the FBI Freedom of Information Act compliance office which can be
contacted at the following address:

The CD-ROM set consists of three disks, but almost all of the relevant
references are on disk No. 1. The documents for the 1970-1972 period
are divided into more than 30 separate files in Adobe Acrobat PDF
format. These typically range from about 150 pages to more than 300
pages each. Not all papers in the possession of the FBI were included
on the disks; for example, it appears that Sections 12 and 30 were
omitted in their entirety; in other sections many pages are either
omitted or are almost entirely blacked out.
Highlights:
Most references are in connection with John Kerry's role as spokesman
for the VVAW. In addition to reports on speaking engagements at
different locations, other interesting information is also included:
a) John Kerry is credited with having referred to Ho Chi Minh as the
George Washington of Vietnam.
b) John Kerry in several documents is placed at the controversial
executive committee meeting of the VVAW, which took place Nov. 12-14,
1971.
c) John Kerry was named in November 1971 as being the subject of a
pending FBI investigation, File No.: 100-172952.
