Oh hell -- most Everyone read it at the time. And had read similar
stories for the previous decade or so as well. But they were always
nonsense, in that they contradicted the basic Laws of Thermodynamics.
Did you also read about the small tablet you could drop into your gas
tank, fill it with water and the car would run for a week thereafter?
How about the Secret Camaro that GM is supposed to have "accidentally"
let loose to someone who got 80 mpg with a 302 engine, and GM is
supposed to have bought it back for (the figures vary) anywhere from
$10,000 to $100,000 with the Sworn Promise from the original buyer
that he would Never, on pain of whatever, tell Anyone about it.
Yeah, right.
There was an old joke about a guy who started to buy these special
gadgets that was current at the time. He bought a carburetor that
would save him 50% on gas, and a "mini-supercharger" that would save
him 30% on gas, and an "ionizer" that would save him 25% on gas -- but
he could never drive the car after he bolted the stuff on, because the
gas tank kept overflowing.

He didn't say you would Have been able to get it on the Internet at
the time. His comment was in the Present tense.
