Frustrated with Freelance

My boyfriend has been trying to start his career as a freelance writer
and at first things went really well. He set up an account on
Associated Content and even got a job writing for a gaming company.
However, the payment for his efforts was minimal which I understand
since it is the beginning of his career. We have been looking for ways
that he can make more money but we keep finding scams that want you to
pay $29.95 for stupid things like books on how to become a freelance
writer. I'm sure we can get that information for free :-P

What I would really like to do is connect with real people who make
their living as a writer. We really need some advice on how to get
more page views (search engine submissions, etc) and where to find
higher paying jobs. I work in the IT industry so I have absolutely no
idea how to help him.

Please...any information at all would be helpful.
