I would pretty much run from Associated Content. Don't know of
anybody that got much more than pocket change from them.
I work magazines and some other kinds of writing specializing in
medically-related stuff. But there are many other specialties out there.
Below is an e-mail I send from time-to-time when nurses and other
medical professionals ask me about writing. When you go through it, just
think "your area of interest/expertise" where I say medical and 90% of
this should work.
If you haven't already, run, do not walk, to the nearest book store
and
get a copy of Writer's Market. This is a great starting place since it
has a whole long list of magazines broken out by topic. In addition to
the obvious (ie medical), I would also look around it for general
magazines, consumer health, women's etc.
WMkt gives you the name of the magazine, the contact, how much they pay,
when they pay (acceptance or publication which can be months apart. Try,
when possible, to get paid on acceptance), the topics they are looking
for, how many words, etc. After narrowing down the field to a few that
are interesting, go to the library and try to find a few back copies to
look through to get a better idea of what they have done recently (and
thus would not be interested in doing) and also what kind of slant they
look for.
