searching for a noise

Hi everybody,


I'm trying to find out what kind of noise this is:

It is a brainteaser, and I have no idea what it could be. There are some
hints given:

1.  In former times you would have to travel to 
    Asia or Africa to create this noise.

2.  You don't have to be a musician to create the
    noise, but it might be advantageous.

3.  You need a musical instrument to create this 
    noise
